Union territory is a separate administrative division. India has a list UT’s that have been created for some specific reasons. There are some differences between UT and state. To govern the UT’s the Indian government usually hires an administrator. In India you would find seven UT’s among which Delhi is one and also Chandigarh which is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

Union territories are not states they differ from the states. These areas are too small to form a state. When such an area comes to notice, usually the government turns the area into a part of another state. However, when it comes to UT, the uniqueness of the area restricts the government from making it a part of another state. This is the reason, the UT’s are created.

The legislative assembly is formed with maximum 500 members. The biggest state of the country which is Utter Pradesh has 403 members. The member of legislative assembly or Member of Legislative Assembly gets elected by voting. To be eligible for the position one has to be a citizen of the country. The person needs to be more than 25 years of age. No one can become the member of legislative assembly and legislative council at the same time.

The term of the assembly continues for a stretch of five years. The term might get over earlier than that. However, for that to happen, the Chief Minister must request to the governor. In the emergency cases, the term might get extended. However, the term does not get extended more than six years even if the emergency situation continues. The legislative assembly plays a significant role in lawmaking. You would get to know more about it and the UT’s if you explore deeper.
